Giving group grades instead of individual grades is fair and effective.

Giving group grades instead of individual grades removes the individual accountability essential for cooperative learning to work. Group grades allow the weaker links to just sit back and let the more responsible students do all the work.

In my experience as a student this is true. I can rarely remember a time when there wasn't at least one member of my group who didn't pull their weight on a group grade and didn't even try to hide it. Then it is left to the student to "tattle" on the student who didn't do their work, or let them slide by. This is unfair to the student either way.
